Brazilian hand- made hammocks

Portinari - Enterro na Rede (1944)
The earliest hammocks were woven in central America from the bark of the Hamak tree. The Sisal plant later replaced the bark as the material of choice for the hammock because it was more abundant, and its fibers could be softened by rubbing them against the thigh. Because of the extensive trade routes which were established between the Indian nations of Central and South America, the hammock naturally found its way into the heart and home of millions of natives. Hammocks were soon being made from indigenous fabrics and materials which resulted in a multitude of styles, which have evolved to the classic cloth/fabric hammock, typical of Brazil, and cord and rope hammocks similar to today's styles.
In the interior of the Brazilian north- east, the "Sertão", a custom in the poorest areas was to bury or transport the dead (as can be seen in the painting on the left- burial in a hammock) in a hammock
Brazilian cotton hammocks are hand made, usually brightly colored and especially suited to slightly cooler climates, owing to the tightly-wound nature of their fibers. Brazilian hammocks do not use a wooden separator at each end, and are ideal for lying diagonally, their tight-weave also creating an extra sense of security.
Utilizing a hanging loop these hammocks are easy to hang and provide a more traditional look and feel. Because they are made with 100% cotton they disperse your body weight evenly over the entire hammock surface. Due to the handmade artistry of these hammocks, fringe designs may vary from hammock to hammock. See photos at the bottom for details. Many more variations exist.
These hammocks are stronger than they look. Crafted of cotton, hand woven hammocks feature tight weaves that offer excellent support. Some are even large enough to hold the whole family! And because they don't take up a lot of space, these hammocks are also favorites among dorm rooms, bedrooms, and family rooms
Skilled artisans carefully craft these hammocks to give you the ultimate experience in long-lasting comfort. It's not just a hammock - it's an individual piece of art for your outdoor retreat.
